How to Find the Evangelisation Opportunities Around You

While many Christians feel uncertain about evangelisation, there are often far more opportunities around us than we realise.

In a recent Alpha Chat podcast, I sat down with Ben Higgins from Alpha and Ruth Powell from NCLS Research to discuss findings on evangelisation from the last National Church Life Survey (NCLS) and to explore a question that many Christians wrestle with: How do we share our faith confidently in a culture that often seems uninterested in Christianity?

The conversation highlighted something both encouraging and challenging. While many Christians feel uncertain about evangelisation, there are often far more opportunities around us than we realise.

The Evangelisation Confidence Gap

Many believers genuinely care about the people in their lives. They want friends, family members, neighbours and colleagues to experience the hope they have found in Jesus. Yet when it comes to starting spiritual conversations or extending an invitation to church, Alpha or another faith-related event, confidence can quickly disappear.

Questions arise:

  • Will they be interested?
  • What if they say no?
  • What if I don’t have the answers?
  • What if I damage the relationship?

These concerns are understandable. However, one of the key insights from our conversation was that our assumptions about people’s openness are not always accurate. Many people are more willing to discuss spirituality than we think.

Looking Again at Our Everyday Relationships

Evangelisation doesn’t always begin with a big event or a carefully planned conversation. More often, it begins with paying attention.

Who has God already placed in your world?

  • A neighbour you’ve chatted with for years
  • A work colleague going through a difficult season
  • A friend who has questions about purpose and meaning
  • A family member who is curious but hesitant
  • Someone who has recently experienced loss, change or uncertainty

The people around us may already be searching for connection, hope and answers. Sometimes the most significant step is simply noticing the opportunities that are already present.

The Power of an Invitation

Research consistently shows that one of the most common reasons people explore faith is because someone they trust invited them. Not because they were persuaded by a perfect argument. Not because they attended a large event. But because a friend extended a simple invitation.

An invitation says:

  • “I’d love you to come with me.”
  • “Would you like to explore these questions together?”
  • “You’re welcome here.”

For many churches, Alpha provides a natural environment for these conversations because people can ask questions, express doubts and explore faith without pressure.

Evangelisation is About Relationship

One of the strongest themes from our discussion was the importance of authentic relationships.

People are often drawn to faith through genuine connection before they engage with Christian beliefs. This means evangelisation isn’t primarily about having all the right answers. It’s about being present, listening well and creating space for meaningful conversations.

As followers of Jesus, we are called to be faithful, not perfect. God is already at work in people’s lives long before we enter the conversation.

A Challenge for This Week

Take a few minutes to reflect on your own context.

Ask yourself:

  1. Who are the people God has placed around me?
  2. Which relationships might be open to deeper conversations?
  3. What assumptions am I making about people’s interest in faith?
  4. Is there someone I could invite to Alpha, church or a spiritual conversation this month?

You may discover that the opportunity is closer than you think.

You Don’t Have to Do This Alone

One of the greatest barriers to evangelisation is feeling like you’re carrying the responsibility on your own.

At Alpha Australia, we’re passionate about helping churches and leaders create spaces where people can explore faith and encounter Jesus.

Whether you’re:

  • Considering running Alpha for the first time
  • Looking to strengthen your church’s culture of invitation
  • Wanting practical support and training
  • Exploring ways to engage your local community

our team would love to help.

The mission of evangelisation has never been about having all the answers. It’s about faithfully stepping into the opportunities God places before us and trusting Him with the results.

Perhaps the next step isn’t finding new opportunities.

Perhaps it’s recognising the ones already in front of you.
